The essentials are a texture paint or sand for the ground surface, a wash to shade it, a drybrush highlight colour, and optionally tufts or static grass for a finished look. Warhammer Colour texture paints like Astrogranite or Armageddon Dust make basing very quick and easy.
The quickest method is to apply a Warhammer Colour Technical texture paint to the base, let it dry, drybrush with a light colour, add a tuft of static grass, and seal with matt varnish. This takes around 10 minutes per base and looks excellent.
